If you’ve noticed more e-bikes on the streets of Paterson and Ridgewood lately, you aren’t alone. These bikes have become a go-to for commuters across Passaic and Bergen Counties. However, the legal landscape is shifting significantly. Starting in June 2026, New Jersey is implementing strict new requirements for e-bikes.

At Raff & Raff, LLP, we want to ensure our neighbors stay safe and legally protected as these new regulations take effect. The law now treats e-bikes more like motor vehicles than traditional bicycles. To ride any e-bike, you must be at least 15 years old. If you are 17 or older, a standard NJ driver’s license is sufficient. However, teenagers aged 15 and 16 must now obtain a specific motorized bicycle license, which requires passing a vision test, a knowledge test, and a practical road test at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Furthermore, all e-bikes must now be registered with the state and carry valid liability insurance, just like a car.

For those involved in collisions with cars, the new classification also clarifies insurance obligations. E-bike riders may now be eligible for certain protections, but only if they comply with the law. Proper documentation is no longer just a “good idea,” it is the backbone of your legal protection.

At Raff & Raff, LLP, we have spent decades serving the people of Northern New Jersey. We understand how a sudden accident can turn your life upside down, and we are here to help you navigate these new, complex rules.

Our goal is to ensure that a simple paperwork error doesn’t prevent you from getting the justice and medical care you deserve.

Stay safe, wear your helmet, and ensure you are fully licensed and insured before the June deadline.
